Indoor plants can breathe life into any living space, offering visual appeal and improving the air quality. While it can thrive in various locations, I recommend growing your peace lily in your bedroom (and you’ll see why)! In this blog post, we will explore how to BEST care for a peace lily, including its water and light requirements (I promise, it's very simple)!
Why Choose a Peace Lily?
Low Maintenance: Peace lilies are highly regarded for their low maintenance. They can withstand some neglect and bounce back quickly with proper care. This makes them an ideal choice for busy individuals or those new to plant care.
Versatile Placement: While peace lilies can be grown in various locations, I recommended growing yours in a bedroom with at least one window. However, no matter where they are grown their glossy leaves and flowers are sure to add an aesthetic charm to any space.
Air-Purifying Properties: Peace lilies are known for their air-purifying qualities, such as removing harmful toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene from the air. This helps create a healthier indoor environment.
Water Requirements:
Consistent Moisture: Peace lilies prefer consistently moist soil. Water them when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot and eventual death of the plant.
Keep your eyes on the leaves: Watering every 5-8 days is a great strategy for staying on top of your plants’ needs. However, if you enjoy a challenge, and would like to fine tune the watering for your peace lily, simply pay attention to the leaves! After a strong watering the peace lily will perk up as the water gives it a new shape. But you’ll notice a droop in the leaves a few days after watering, and that is when you’ll water again. This strategy is good because it gives you the reassurance of knowing that you're giving the plant only what it needs (and maybe a little bit more) to sustain its shape and produce new growth!
NOTE: Because your peace lily could have anywhere from 15-100+ leaves, it is normal for a few leaves to turn brown and die! You should have no remorse for taking pruners and getting rid of dying and out-of-place leaves: shape and prune your plant to your liking! Have fun with it but don’t go too crazy!
Light Requirements:
Tolerance to Low-Light Conditions: Peace lilies thrive in high indirect lighting conditions, but the main reason they make such good bedroom plants is because of their tolerance to low-light environments. They can grow well in areas of your home that have lots of light, but also with minimal natural light, making them suitable for various spaces throughout your home. Peace lilies tolerate a wide range of lighting conditions so it will thrive no matter where you place it in your home.
Artificial Lighting: If your chosen spot lacks natural light, you can supplement it with artificial lighting using fluorescent or LED grow lights. Position the lights about 12-18 inches above the plant and maintain a lighting duration of 12-14 hours daily.
